The Memorial's Inauguration

Following the mass, everyone was invited to make their way to the Musée de Vaudreuil and from there follow 12 soldiers from the Compagnie Franche de la Marine to the unveiling of the new Besner park. You should have heard all the noise in the village as these people, turned out in their Sunday best, paraded to the rhythm of the drums and music!

Despite the heat, approximately 400 people made their way to the site of the inauguration of the linear park developed on land cleared by my grandfather Joseph Besner (fifth generation Michel), where my father, along with his brothers and sisters, toiled long and hard to plough, fertilize and cultivate this land that I had the pleasure of discovering during my youth.

The mayor of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Réjean Boyer, who is also a member of our Association (seventh generation of Michel) and son of Rose-Aline Besner and René Boyer, unveiled the sign to inaugurate the park that bears our name.

After short speeches by the Mayor and our President, Elliott, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the arrival of our ancestor Jean in this country. For this unveiling event, a representative of the different Besner lines were invited to participate : Elliott Besner for the Benjamins, Guy Besner for the Potaboires, Roméo Besner for the Paulais, Jeanne Besner-Cloutier for the Pascals, Germain Besner for the Michels, Corinne Bisnaire-Rocheleau for the Bisnaires and finally, Marie-Renée Colin, nee Bézanère, represented our French cousins. A Poem honouring our ancestor was proclaimed by his author All this took place under the surveillance of the Compagnie Franche de la Marine who then made a lot of noise demonstrating shooting in the park. This was a very special way to mark our presence in the land of our ancestor.

To close this ceremony, an oak tree was planted to remind our descendants that on the first of September, in the year 2002, the huge extended Besner family had assembled in this park to celebrate the BESNER name. We must thank the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion personnel for their cooperation in the planning of the opening of this park and the installation of the commemorative stele.

On this very special day, the Musée régional de Vaudreuil held a free open house; I was told that approximately 150 people visited the museum.
